The Wild Thornberrys Review | Nick-O-Rama

These berries have some very conflicting flavors, and yet ultimately come out bland.

  • Why are a lot of these Nicktoons most memorable for one side character? Nigel is by far the most memorable and generally best aspect of this show. Of course a lot of that is due to Tim Curry.

  • Basically this was the show that made me study biology. Jurassic Park made me study palaeontology. They might be really different, but I'm quite the person I am today thanks to them, and for that, this show takes a really special part in my soul. Yet, they both don't have Master Iroh. But you don't need it all to be memorable in a good way.

  • I understand that you find the lack of supervision of Elisa dangerous It is dangerous to leave a children alone outside, especially in jungles with wild animals However I need to point out something, the Thornberry family is constantly in the wild, it would be safe to assume that most of their time thay are in the jungles or the fields, not so much in suburbs or cities (that's one of the complaints that the elder sister has, she wants to live in the city and live her life with her friends, but can't because of the job of her parents) And when someone doesn't live in the city, they often learn how to handle themselves in the open, they teach their children and are more confident with them exploring, they even let their young children search and hunt the dinner. My aunt was a biologist, she often went to the forests and jungles and she is very carefree in that sense, and a lot of biologists are like that, they are not afraid of the nature but they respect it, and they give the same sentiment to their children The character of Nigel in that sense is very well done, most biologists are like him, they find everything in nature interesting, even the stuff we find weird or ugly. That's why I don't find that weird that Elisa's parents give her so much freedom, they see that she can handle herself and always comes back, so they let her explore, they also let her sister stay in they bus. (And let me tell you something when you are in constant traveling, hours and hours of constant driving, even the most comfortable and big vehicle becomes a walking cage, when you finally arrive to your destination you only want to stretch and walk) For example a person that has only lived in the city wouldn't know how to handle a snake, or would go crazy of the sound of a lot of mosquitos, they probably wouldn't know how to climb a tree, but people that lived in the wild are not only used to it, they know what to do In a secondary note, often the fist observation that the people in the wild have of the city people when they first arrive, is that they are too loud, when you are in the jungle you tend to be quiet not only to hear possible predators, but also so they don't hear you.

  • I was pretty heavily into reptiles as a kid, so I did find it pretty insulting that they managed to fuck up the info on Komodo dragons that horribly. So far as I'm aware, instances of them eating a human have only ever been unconfirmed rumors. There might've been a case of them eating a human corpse (I'd have to check again), but they definitely don't predate on humans. And it's such an unnecessary dosage of bullshit, too. Komodo dragons are known to eat monkeys, so it should've been enough to just have Darwin be the one in any real danger, but no, we gotta have the lizard unrealistically intending to eat Eliza as well just because.

  • First, yes, Tim Curry owned this show is Nigel "Smashing!" Thornberry. His attitude and mannerisms were so infectious. Second, you left out that Donny was voiced by Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Just yelled gibberish at a mic all day. Easiest. Job. Ever. Lastly, HOLY SHIT DONNY'S REAL PARENTS WERE KILLED BY POACHERS?! WHEN DID THEY REVEAL THAT?! It must have been after I stopped watching.

  • While CatDog was more of a hit or miss due to going too far with it’s mean spirited moments and asshole characters,I just find the characters to be more tolerable compared to the ones in CatDog(Debbie was more of a sarcastic teenage daughter,Donnie was more of a wacky child and the absolute reason the Thornberrys adopted him is that he was actually raised by orangutans when his parents were killed and I find his gibberish very funny thanks to Red Hot Chili Peppers singer,Flea doing the voice),plus the movie was freckin awesome thanks to Paul Simon’s Father and Daughter.

  • ive always liked this cartoon and think it was special, your right in how it struggles with itself alot so the show as a whole is somewhat hit and miss...but taken episode by episode, there are some real gems. infact some of my favorite nicktoons episodes come from wild thorn berries, i particularly like the ones that revolve around legends, and supernatural themes such as the one about the day of the dead, and the episode when eliza gets lost in a haunted forest.

  • Actually I think the stick with Donny is that he is supposed to be a feral child that neither humans or animals are able to verbally communicate with easily or vice versa since his parents were killed when he was young and unable to teach him in human communication or sociaisation and being a human he isn't able to normally communicate with animals the same way animals communicate with each other for either to easily understand each other verbally; so he ends up speaking in some kind of feral language all his own as a way to show the divide and split between him being a human who had to live among animals with no human contact and yet couldn't understand or effectively communicate with the animals who raised him? I dunno, I guess part of it could be just post hoc pontification to make sense of it on my part; but from what I remember watching of the show, that's the impression I got and I it kind of made sense to me under that auspice.

  • Man, outside of the intro, this show looks better after its switched to digital coloring. The opposite problem of the best inked and shaded Late 90s anime. Late 90s Rugrats and Rocket Power look just as good digital or inked. Thorberrys season 1, to a slightly lesser extent than pre revival Rugrats isnt that well shaded and its a bit pale and/or pink. These shows would benefit from a remaster.

    Nicolas ReversatNicolas Reversatหลายเดือนก่อน
  • Huh - I didn’t know this show generally wasn’t that well-liked; I loved it as a kid since I was one of those elementary schoolers always bingeing on animal encyclopedias and I guess the whole “was originally going to be an educational show but then was made into a ‘normal’ show” mixing-shenanigans-with-spotlighting-animals-I-might-not-have-heard-of-before-and-facts-about-them thing worked for me. Though at the same time I can’t deny that on the “shenanigans” front, in terms of the main cast, I did always like Nigel being his silly endearing self and Marianne being the straight man to it better than anything Eliza, Darwin, or Debbie did as characters. I also legitimately forgot Donnie existed until I watched this.

  • A little thing that always bothered me as a kid is the fantasy premise is completely wasted basically the show is saying just this one random guy is Magic and everything else in the world is normal like this one tribal guy can grant powers like talking to animals but everything else is still the same and like there's episodes where they tease about more mystical things like yetis are dinosaurs existing but they completely don't do anything with it a smart thing to do would just be saying that her dad was a genius who invented a machine that lets her talk to animals that's a little more easier to swallow than just one person in the entire world knows magic and nobody else knows anything Supernatural
