Coffee is one of the most popular commodities on Earth. It's grown by nearly 125 million farmers, from Latin America to Africa to Asia. But as man-made climate change warms the atmosphere, the notoriously particular coffee plant is struggling. Places like Colombia, which once had the perfect climate to grow Arabica coffee, are changing. Now, experts estimate the amount of land that can sustain coffee will fall 50 percent by 2050. It's not just a crisis for consumers but for the millions who have made a livelihood out of growing coffee. is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines. I have an electric roaster and electric grinders but I also have a cast iron frying pan to roast by hand. I have manual grinders I picked up at the thrift store. I have electric coffee/espresso machines, stove top glass and corningware percolators, a French press and a campfire pot for cowboy coffee. I use instant coffee as well and looking to store more of it. I have this coffee thing down for the near future.

  • 6:49 Coffee industry in Columbia is thriving after international agreement sets minimum price export in 1962. 8:30 Coffee farmers in Columbia start losing profit because the international treaty setting a price minimum falls apart in 1980s. More countries are flooding the market with cheap coffee. Ok I understand climate change was and is a factor in the amount of money these farmers make. I also appreciate that Vox is presenting all the information available in this persuasive video. However, at 4:07 they say that the amount of land dedicated to farming these beans has dropped 7%. Now, what percentage of this 7% drop is due to the loss of business because the influx of cheap coffee? From an economist perspective, It seems to me that they're losing market share because people who want to drink cheap coffee are buying from retailers who purchase from these cheap coffee farms. Before this, those customers were force to buy more expensive, price regulated coffee. I'd imagine when the demand for expensive Colombian coffee exceeds the amount these farms produce, the farms can hike up the export price and start to make money again.

  • Farmers are dealing with a problem that could have been avoided if they'd cultivated other crops along with coffee. While I do feel sorry for them, I also believe this is a problem created by the greed to make more money off of one crop. Monocultures are unsustainable not just for the environment but also for economy.

  • More than 50 years ago people knew this issue and moved coffee growing to cooler countries or mixed banana trees (shade trees) with coffee. Even in Mexico, a country with a cooler climate, grows coffee with bananas. Maybe Colombia should have started growing other crops like avocados, or they should have invested in research in hardier coffee strains. Other countries have and have adapted.

      ciamberciamber4 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • This is the problem that we see in a lot of other places... everyone focuses on that "conspiracy" or "controversy" instead of focusing on what's being talked in the video, i.e. missing the point. And I'm pretty sure Vox only used Starbucks because it's easily recognisable (regardless of viewers' taste in Starbucks).

      HaedenHaeden6 วันที่ผ่านมา
  • As others have said, if production has hardships but the price is low, that doesn't add up. If climate change reduces yields, that will reduce supply, and the price will rise. If the price isn't rising, then there's either a supply increase somewhere else (perhaps a region that is becoming more coffee friendly due to climate change, or other factors like politics), or the demand is reduced (covid-induced genocide of coffee shops). So either these farmers are being out-competed, or it's just a demand slump.
