NFL referees have been a source of anger for thousands of NFL fans since the league's earliest days, but in recent years it's felt like NFL officials are incapable of getting out of the way and just letting football games play out without awful interference. Today I try to find out what's causing this new epidemic of incompetence and attempt to find a solution. With science.

  • No one expects refs to be perfect on every single play. But they need to be able to correct their calls/penalties on the field when instant replay shows they were clearly wrong. Bottom line - refs need to be held accountable.

  • Professional Football is my religion. I have my favorite team that I root for and watch fanatically, and expecting them win a Super Bowl year in and year out. With that said, I still watch every football game regardless of who is playing. I spend a small fortune every single year, rather I'm shelling out over $200 for NFL Sunday Ticket, $100's of dollars for jerseys, or $100's of dollars on trivial things such as coasters. I am in total agreement with your critic of the NFL's officiating. It's a total joke. I vividly remember watching the 2002 NBA Western Conference Finals between the Sacramento Kings and L.A. Lakers . Anyone who's informed about that infamous series knows what I'm talking about. Everyone watching knew the fix was in, and the better team did not emerge triumphantly. This is important, because at the time, I new in my heart and mind that kind of sh*t could never happen, and would never happen, in the NFL. Unfortunately, from what I've witnessed over the last 18 years, I no longer feel that way about the NFL.

  • For $200,000 per season, I'd say they need to get it right. The compensation isn't the problem, and throwing more money at it will not make the calls any more accurate. I like that they have a review board looking at their calls each week, but I think the rules are so convoluted and worded so poorly that there's more questions than answers on some things during gameplay. The other I think has to do with physicality - if you can't place yourself in the right position to actually see the field and the targeted players, or if you can't react quickly enough to developing plays, you shouldn't be on the field. Maybe one day there won't be officials on the field throwing the flags, it'll be entirely co-opted by drones, or the booth upstairs watching the video footage in real time with one ref sharing the calls with the stadium attendees. If they could find a way to cut down on the amount of time dedicated to the penalties and delays of the game, it would dedicate more time to gameplay, and keep the games at a reasonable length without long interruptions. Just a thought.

  • Hmm who is the most accurate & biggest fan favorite when it comes to refs? Oh right Hochuli, if u don't wanna fire the sleeping idiot Al riveron, pay Hochuli to come out of retirement to split Riverons power & control 50/50.

  • I agree with the points made but one thing that could skyrocket this process would be going through and trying to make the rules more black and white. A big issue with some of the controversy are rules that are extremely gray and can be interpreted differently by people.

  • NFL needs to hire back Gene Steratore, Dean Blandino, and all the other former refs working for networks. Pay them a lot more than the Networks we’re paying them because they’re great at their jobs and let NFL fans look into how calls are decided like the XFL.

  • I dont know if officiating has actually gotten worse or HD cameras have just simply gotten so powerful that it's well beyond what 7 humans can see at any time. I like the idea of a sky judge who is part of the crew. I think maybe they should showcase more behind the scenes of the training and evaluation so people better appreciate the work that goes into being an official. Like for example, if there's a written rules test, let fans take that to see how they would do in comparison. I understand the nfl wanting to protect privacy of officials for safety reasons but it's foolish to try to keep their profession invisible overall.

  • Here's a question: Why not do away with human referees altogether? Why not solely use modern technology like instant replays and eliminate the chance of ever getting a call wrong?

    Furious ShermanFurious Shermanหลายเดือนก่อน
  • They ruined the Refs with instant replay . The Refs are so frightened of making a mistake they end up nit picking ( and then they miss the obvious , trying to be perfect so that replay doesn't overturn anything ) The refs cant call the game as they see it anymore , almost overthinking everything.

  • The long and short answer: Unions. The union protects them from scrutiny. The union keeps their decisions secret. The union forces out old talent in favor of green new blood. The union has the NFL by the balls and Roger Goodell has about as much of a say as the average dickhead on his couch any given sunday. They let the union get way too strong and it's going to take years to reign them in as they slowly realize their greed is killing the sport.

  • A lot of the "best refs" in recent years were known for giving a short explanation of a call and why it was made (or why it wasn't) when providing their verdict after a review. Implement that on a wider scale. All I've ever wanted was transparency. Even if the implemented rules are garbage, at least I'll be able to understand *why* a call is made if you explain it rather than just being lost and confused on why for the next 3 1/2 plays my team's star center has to sit out...

  • Sometimes, I think the recent (last ten years) of exceptional incompetence by NFL referees is an intentional ploy by the referees union to use as a negotiating tactic for their desire to make referees full time NFL employees rather than seasons employees. NFL officials don't need to be full time. They don't need "more hours." They are paid $200K+ per year. They do not need to have another job. They can do self-improvement training on their own in the off season, just like athletes do their own training in the off season when they're not getting paid for it.

  • Yeah refereeing is an extremely challenging and intense job. It's not easy to do, and it's easy to make a mistake. I think sometimes people expect way too much from the refs. I think people who give all the hate should try to ref some of their local games. It's not easy, and you understand you get no sympathy when the shoes on the other foot. If you expect perfection you need to pay for perfection. Otherwise you can't really expect a missed or even botched call from a ref every once and a while; we're human. Sorry this may be rambling, but as someone who has reffed for around 3 years now it's just easy to criticize when you think things are obvious, when they're not.
