Space age audio - fifty years on

The Apollo 11 moon landing encounters the Philips UFO.
Depending upon what source you read, the date for the introduction of the Philips UFO turntable might vary. Multiple sources indicate that the design was done by Patrice Dupont in 1969 - these include sound-of-design.de/en/node/188 - and the book “L'utopie du tout plastique : 1960-1973”. However other online sources state the GF303 was manufactured from 1972-1974. Irrespective of which one is correct, it’s irrefutably a classic space-age design.
COMMENTS: Unfortunately as soon as this video was posted the comments were immediately inundated with individuals promoting their own agendas and conspiracy theories. As a result of this, other viewers complained that the comments needed moderating because of all the spam. I therefore pinned a notice to advise that comments would be moderated - however that idea got the free speech advocates up in arms.
So here's what I'm doing - I'm just going to let the comments do their own thing - I won't be reading them and I won't be moderating them.
I will be offline today, working on another video.
It's up to each individual to decide whether to read the comments.
The ratio of comments to views is one stat to keep in mind though if you do choose to read them. Approximately only 1% of viewers comment on any given video. Most comments are friendly and helpful - the unpleasant ones only represent a fraction of that one percent of viewers. So it might be wise not to spend too long thinking about a statistical rounding error.
If anyone wants to post their agenda on TH-vision they should make their own video about it rather than trying to piggyback on a video about a record player.

Another thing I never really appreciated: the moon landing effort began in earnest in 1962 (Kennedy at Rice University) and completed by 1969. Then they did moon landings up until Dec 1972. Then Apollo was replaced by the Space Shuttle that operated from 1981 to 2011 (30 years, 135 launches). The reason I never appreciated the close proximity between Apollo and the Shuttle was because I was born in 1968, so I was too young to appreciate any of the moon trips. Obviously I heard of them, but to me they were always something from way back in the deep past. I always regarded the shuttle as the modern way to launch, and the rockets of old to be out of date and wasteful. Well they were - but then so too were the solid boosters off the shuttle. Oh well - and very interesting track too, btw!

If it was a plain metal stylus, it might be okay, but you should never do that with a diamond stylus, as far as I know... Anyway, great video, and now I need to search for that record, it looks awesome! :) So is the turntable, but I wouldn't put any valuable records under such needle pressure...

  • Comments of flatties and space deniers are annoying aren't they? Btw that's a very nice foldout that came with that vinyl. The motor has quite an unusual brush-commutator arrangement. Thanks for uploading this! Weltron made similar space-design devices for vinyl, 8-track & c-cassette. I've seen pictures so far of vinyl / 8-track / radio or vinyl / c-cassette / radio combos, and about at least 4 different variants of 8-track / radio or c-cassette / radio combo "space ball" designs, 2-2 of each. It'd be nice seeing a vid one day showing each of those Weltrons. Models 2001 / 2004 / 2005 / 2007 / 2010 / XX-10. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weltron Btw, can you make a vid on how did you manage to get them to make you that techmoan vinyl (of tefifon music)? :D
