Shop work continues at Cornstar Farms. Equipment still needs greased, and tore into. The video starts off with Daddy Cornstar waxing the 1981 John Deere 4840. While he is waxing, he explains why he waxes equipment. DC also gives an update on the JD selling situation.
While Dad continued waxing, I give everyone a little lesson on greasing. Lets call it Greasing 101. After Greasing 101, Dad continues with maintenance to the JD and changes the oil filter and air filters.
In the mean time, I decided to move onto removing the bearings under the trap doors on the grain trailer. I have never taken these off before so it was a little bit of a learning curve. Once I got them off the trailer, I accessed the damages, and figured out what we needed to order for parts. Before we quit for the night we check in with Cooper and do a quick run down on the Freightliner.
The next day, I drove across the great state of Iowa to get parts for the semi trailer. Cooper took over my duties on the grain trailer, so I started tearing the corn head apart to fix a bent shaft. After making quite a few mistakes and crawling all over the corn head, I got a row unit apart and then bent shaft out.
I give another update on all the machinery in the shop and plans for working on machinery in the future. Before the video ends I give a motivational speech telling everyone to not be afraid to try. Finally, we decided to call it a night.

Thank you for watching!

  • Get a high pressure tip, it fits right into the ball of the grease zerk and and as long as you hold it tight it to the zerk it shouldn't reject the grease. On some steering grease fittings, you might have to jack the weight off the component so get the grease to take which no one does. Basically do the best you can and move on.

  • Cole I don't think you needed to put new yokes on that shaft. What usually goes bad are the bearings. Replace the crosses ,lot less work and cheaper. Nothing wrong with the ends called yokes, the weld you are going to cut seems fine. But maybe it's bent and I'm wrong. But cool videos man. Just started watching yesterday. Good stuff

  • love, love, LOVE watching these videos. Such positive attitudes, and your "get it done" attitude is priceless. What a wonderful family. Keep up the good work. I'm a 65 yr old female, originally from South Dakota, now been in southern California for the past 25 yrs. I was back in Iowa visiting relatives last summer, and it was just so calming to drive the back roads and looking at all the corn fields........ it's a magical place.

  • Thx for the video Cole. I manage 33 acres of hazelnuts on the west coast in Oregon. My dad owns and did operate the orchard but retired 2 years ago and left it to me, Ive had to learn on the go and ask many questions along the way. So now I manage the nut trees , and all the equipment used to work the orchard, which includes two case tractors, a JD tractor, a nut sweeper, a nut harvester, sprayers, etc..... a couple of years ago I got the picture of what farming is like, doesn’t really matter the crop, nothin cheap about it.

  • BTW for your shop floor - paint is the pits. It never sticks, gets to be a patchy mess, etc. But I stumbled on the perfect solution - concrete stain! Let the stain (not oil!) penetrate and seal your concrete. Works awesome and makes cleanup simple. All kinds of textures/colors are available. Cheaper than paint too :) Now if I could just get the little bit of paint that didn't come off on it's own off my garage floor so I can stain the whole thing - d'oh!

  • Hey Cole, have you guys ever tried out quartz/SIO2 wax? Not sure what exact products you guys have available there, but there are waxes out there that spray on, either out of a squirt bottle or a foam cannon on a waterblaster and they just rinse off. Usually its used on cars/motorbikes, but i cant see any reason it wouldn't work on farm equipment too. I use the stuff made by Fireball and would highly recommend it. Just a thought, a product like that would save Daddy Cornstar hours waxing the machines.
