  • Apple has always been about status. Steve Jobs started that from the start with closed systems with limited upgradability and extremely expensive components and repairs. It was never truly about how well they would run or what it could run, it was about how much money he could make. Even now, long after Jobs and Woz, Apple still runs on that premise. Go look at their web page; their ads for their computers don't start with what they can do, they start with how light they are and what colors they come in and how you can impress others.

  • Sorry but I can't agree with you. Moving three files into a folder on a Mac takes 1 second, doing the same on Windows takes about 10 to 20 seconds. Restarting Windows takes "forever", sometimes up to 5 minutes. A Mac takes 30 seconds. Shutting down a Windows laptop takes "ages" up to 3 to 4 minutes sometimes, whereas a Mac takes about 20 to 30 seconds. Things just seem to "work better" on a Mac and a lot faster too.

  • The funny thing is--the "fancy package" of an apple computer that people complain about includes the screen, keyboard, mouse, and it's portability which are leagues above most other computers. They even fixed the CPU issue now that most of this video is focused on. Like there are maybe 2 or 3 windows laptops that are actually comparable in terms of screen, trackpad, and form factor--and in each example they are slightly worse in terms of actual experience doing everyday work (well, depending on how you feel about the current mac keyboard... but the screen and trackpad are the best out there, period. Additionally, the laptops that do occupy these spaces tend to be even less reliable (maybe the thinkpad X1 carbon being the one exception). But things like Razer, Dell XPS, and Microsoft Surface all have their own bag of issues.

  • You will probably never see this but what the hell... I love your videos but you are wrong about a few things here... 1. Regardless of Apples marketing people dont just get the laptops for sex appeal. For business use they are more cost effective when you calculate total cost of ownership for enterprise use. 2. Many users, in fact the majority engineers - developers, secops, devops etc (in my experience & will differ by company) prefer macOS. I use windows 10 on my gaming PC obviously but i find macOS much better for work. Thats not say many people dont get them just because they look pretty 3. They have better build quality... they really do... we have several 100 lenovos, which are great laptops and last very well but they just cant compete with apple. Dont even get me started on Dell which seems to fall to pieces if you just look at it wrong Having said that i agree with you on many things about apple, their shit marketing, going full USB C and then making you buy those idiotic dongles etc etc Source - leading IT in a multi platform environment for 2000+ users PS. I used to be a hardcore windows fanboy and would preach about mac being shit all day. I only started using it 3 years ago because we had to support it... dont get me wrong im not an apple fan boy either but having been on both sides of the fence i will say this... Windows fanboys be the most ignant mofos around... they are like religious zealots when it comes to windows but in reality, although W10 is a huge step in the right direction microsoft also does some really stupid and really annoying things for administrators. They are also one of the worst vendors to deal with in enterprise because their contracts suck, they are expensive and they are inflexible. Apple sucks too. Google though... mmm oh yeah Google. They are great when it comes to business agreements etc. Love you goog babe

    Ken DodgeKen Dodge4 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • They will run more efficiently. Not sure if they will run cooler. Tho I did read that the A12X Bionic chipset was ranked as having a similar GPU performance to an Xbox One S and a fairly powerful CPU with lot's of extensions, and no advanced power supplies required to achieve this. So if they can build upon that for a laptop and add better cooling then I dare say they will run better.

  • You seem to be blaming Apple for what are essentially problems with Intel chips, that as you observed, also apply to Windows PCs (and remember consumers are going to compare their potential purchase of an Apple PC with a similarly specced Windows PC, so Apple is effectively forced to partake in the megahertz myth. They were burnt by the PowerPC in the early days of Intel computers, you are probably too young to remember that, but they know that the market worships megahertz, and cores, so they give the people what they want.). Apple knows the problems full well, that's why they are hard at work on their own ARM based silicon to directly compete with Intel in the mobile PC space... Though I'm confused about your example of the Mac mini's performance versus the portable mac in the cooler, and why it should be underperforming because of thermal issues, given the fact that it supposedly is not designed to run on battery power, so power conservation is not a primary goal, and I would imagine they should be able to design some sort of thermal cooling hardware in a small desktop form factor that does not have thermal throttling issues, unlike a portable, which is constrained by weight and size...

    PixelwashPixelwash4 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • Not necessarily, you guys haven't considered the very real possibly that Intel is the villain here, and that it is pysically impossible to cool these Intel chips with a convection-based temperature differential cooling system (air or water based), and that they actually require some form of actual refrigeration, lol. That's what intrigues me about the result he got with the Mac mini in the fridge. I actually think that it's likely that the mini has got reasonably close to the best fan/heatsink based cooling system possible, and it still thermal throttles. I base that judgement on how small, if any, the performance gains are from fitting third party whacking great heatsinks and new fans to the mini - you can actually buy these, inspired no doubt by false rhetoric here from the likes of Linus tech tips. The fact is these third party cooling solutions for the mini give you practically no performance gain (do a search on YoutTube, there are a few videos showing this) - so you have to put the mini in a refrigerator to see the gains. Which means of course that Intel is to blame, not Apple.

      PixelwashPixelwash4 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • Well no, the point is, apple are sticking high peformance CPU;s in a small space where heat becomes a problem. stick that CPU in a well cooled PC, then there is no issues with that CPU at all

    • @rowan 3 Apple has tight reign over Apple Mac ecosystem. That may deprive it's users of potential gains , in speed and capability, but it does provide a stable, reliable combination of hardware and software. Apple does not see a distinction between hardware and operating system. Apple experimented with 3rd party clones, but killed that program. Although it is possible, Apple does not like end users puting Windows or Linux in Macs.

  • yeaaaa... definitely the wrong person to ask this (king of the PCMR), but i respect your opinions on all things computers.... so i'm just going to ask. i'm considering trading in my 2017 5k imac and getting the refreshed 13"mbp. thoughts? the only reasons i'd want to hang on to the imac is for the 27" 5k display, no t2 chip, and user upgradeable RAM; but there are so many other things going against the imac. i would like to think apple is going to refresh it sometime in the next year? or less? the looks are dated, which i don't care that much about in and of itself, but if a redesign comes with upgraded I/O, that's something I'd want. It's also got the same old ass BT, not even an option for 10gig ethernet (not that I can make the most of it, but it's like a $90 upgrade on the mac mini), the vega 48 seems like an overpriced and lackluster upgrade, and they leave so much empty space on the inside, which could have been used for a secondary fan(????), which would seem like a smart idea for a computer with heat issues... desktops are going out of fashion, and mobile productivity is the present and the future. But I still do enjoy the desktop experience. I figure that with a MBP + TB3hub + egpu + external storage, I can get similar performance (if I go for the 15"), plus portability. As far as why i'm looking at the 13" mbp is because I can almost trade them for each other straight up (maybe a few hundred on top for upgraded RAM and SSD). Ideally I'd like the MBP 15" with the vega 20 and 32gb RAM and a larger SSD thanks to the price drops. But because of the nightmare stories I've seen relating to the keyboard and thermal throttling, it seems like a big risk to spend that much money on a laptop, especially with the rumors of a new MBP with a keyboard going back to the scissor mechanism... even if it ends up being in an even higher tier pricewise. Also, the vega 20, while better than the radeon pro, is still pretty underwhelming. Should I just wait to see what Apple releases for new imacs or mbps? The problem with this is that my trade in value is going to sink fast. No I'm not a "power user", but if I'm going to invest this kind of money on a computer, I want it to have a little more longevity. To be honest, I've had a hard on for the MBP for a while, but the price to performance seems... blehhhh... plus the aforementioned throttling issues and crap keyboard (tbh i like typing on it, but i dont want to deal with having to get it repaired all the time). I'm so torn. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    • Buy a Late 2016 15": performance is good and they're only around $1,300-$1,500 USD now; same price as a 13" quad core 2018 MBP, but with souped up graphics and a bigger better screen and trackpad. Reliability issues are really over dramatized, worst case scenario it's in the Apple store for 3-4 days for a keyboard replacement once.

I mean my AMD 2600x with a 8GB Radeon 590 and 16GB DDR 4 ram doesn't process video as fast as my 2012 iMac does. I also like the fact that if I get software that says it works with High Sierra I know it will work on my Mac, whereas I don't have that same privilege on my win10 system.

  • Two things that I still miss from my Macbook, the trackpad and infrequent OS updates. A Windows PC is just updating itself whenever you turn it on which is very annoying. And in 2019, it’s amazing that PC makers still couldn’t get the trackpad right. No Windows laptop can still beat Macbook trackpads. Functionality wise, Windows throws the Mac out of the water, no denial in that.

Yes a windows laptop can be faster in benchmarks, but in practice a mac is faster in a lot of cases. Especcially if you use software that is designed for macOS. Things like NPM install run almost 5 times as fast on a mac compared to a similar windows PC. Final cut pro will render your video in less than halve the time it’ll take adobe premiere. So yeah specs are nice and all and benchmarks make it possible to compare apples to apples, but in real situations (like they showed for webbrowsing) it will be a lot faster then you might think based on the benchmarks differences.
