Jarome Iginla never won a Stanley Cup. Here's what left him empty-handed.

Corrections: I mispronounced Gelinas and Lecavalier, and incorrectly labeled Nieminen as a defenseman. Thanks to everyone who pointed it out, always trying to get better so that’s genuinely appreciated.
Jarome Iginla was one of the most exciting players to watch. There were so many weapons to his game that made him a consistent threat his entire career. But the longtime Flame never got to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup despite finding himself incredibly close.
In Calgary the biggest issue was financial. It's honestly surprising he was able to stay a Flame as long as he did considering their history of being unable to retain superstar. But with Darryl Sutter handling both coach and GM duties, they made it work. Miikka Kiprusoff came over from San Jose to make the biggest difference. Iginla got help from Craig Conroy leading the hard hat crew of 2004 and ended a lengthy playoff drought by taking a long, winding road to the Final. There they met the Tampa Bay Lightning and combined for an incredible series.
Some might think the answer to why Iginla didn't win a Cup is as simple as "Martin Gelinas no goal in game six," which certainly contributes to it. But they still had another shot after that, and the series hadn't been without drama before then either.
Iginla found more opportunities outside of Calgary as well, jumping aboard the Penguins during 2013's lockout-shortened season to play alongside Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. The league's top offense helped earn the Presidents' Trophy and found no issues through the first two rounds. Then they met the Bruins - the team Iginla could have joined instead of Pittsburgh. It went poorly.
Thankfully Iginla got a do-over and joined Boston for the following season, which like Pittsburgh looked to be a perfect fit. But rivalries tend to spoil things and Montreal did just that in an amazing seven-game series.
It was his last best chance. He came closer than so many, but further than seems fair considering the talent and mindset he maintained over a 20-year career. He's still always going to be one of the best, he's just also going to be untitled.

  • This was a tough one that took a long time to finish because someone (me, Will) is bad at staying focused. There's a lot going on in the world right now, there are so many people feeling helpless or unheard or alone. I just want to say that we love y'all and if we can provide a distraction, even if it's just for 20 minutes, we hope that's something.

    • Well articulated story! I know story makes it sound made up or something, but I don’t mean it that way- you’re telling his story. Iginla was one of those players you hated to play against because he was always dangerous and played a complete game. That first series with Detroit when he was called up was when people really started taking note that wow, this guy is for real. No one should begrudge him for leaving Calgary, he and Fleury did very similar things in terms of their careers. They both gave their best years (and most of their years) to Calgary, and tried to go somewhere they could win a cup (or another for Fleury) before hanging them up.

  • That Pens team was stacked. That was year Shero got the Penguins and his fantasy hockey team rosters mixed up. Iginla needed to play on Sid's right wing, Sid didn't want him because he hates change, and Bylsma wouldn't force the issue. A good coach would have forced Sid to get used to Iginla on the right (his natural position) from the very start. I mean I don't think Bylsma was a bad coach, but he had some serious flaws in his preparation and adjustments and general 'quirks' (his refusal to even attempt to match lines to force favorable match-ups for instance) that even a stacked roster couldn't make up for sometimes. A lot of people think the Iginla trade was one too many but I liked it. It's always been an issue in the Crosby/Malkin era, there's only so many spots in the top two lines, and some guys just either aren't suited for or just don't want to play on the third and fourth lines.

  • Is it possible... is it possible that all these players that never one a championship in any of their sports, despite being as good as they are... just weren't on a very good team? These are still team sports. These are still competitions that can't be carried by a single person. Look at Ken Griffey, Jr. Never went to the world series because the Mariners sucked. Just because you're the greatest player in the sport means nothing if you're on a team that's absolute garbage.

  • I firmly believe Dan bylsma cost iginla his chance at a cup, and Pittsburgh alot of strife, by his determination to not rock the boat and just tell sid you're going to play with iginla on the right. He's lucky his name is on the cup after taking over therrians team.

  • I remember the 2006 year exit, as a Ducks fan. The Flames were a scary team to face, especially with Giguere playing with a hernia. Series could have gone either way, but then in game 6 François Beauchemin vs Jarome Iginla that changed it. When Beauchemin knocked him down with the first punch, and then trading away an unproven Beauchemin for Iginla to be in the box, that was key along with having Bryzgalov, Selanne, and Neidernayer produce big. It's easy in certain sports to go chasing for a cup/ring. Hockey is one of the toughest ones though. It's not guaranteed. I remember when Teemu left Anaheim for San Jose and the Colorado. Glad he was able to not just win one, but do it in Anaheim.

  • Iginla is easily a top-ten player never to win the Cup. At least he's won just about everything else - Olympic gold, World Championship gold, World Cup of Hockey gold, World Junior Championship gold, Memorial Cup. Moreover, Iginla was clutch in the Olympics - scored two goals in the 2002 gold-medal game, assisted on the 2010 gold-medal winning goal. If I were to trade all of this for one Stanley Cup, think I'd pass on that offer. I'd been hoping the Canucks would acquire Iginla by 2012 or 2013, pair him with the Sedins. Would have given him - and Vancouver - their best shot at winning that elusive Cup. Would be terrible irony though, the Flames' greatest player of all time winning his first Cup with their big rival.

  • Eerily similar to the 2011 finals where a marginal play results in a suspension to a defenseman while the American team can get away with anything without being penalized. Sutter was absolutely right, the league favors certain teams, and if you're from the great white north, you ain't one of those teams.

The building was rocking so hard I was sucked in like I was when I watched those small stadium Premier League matches with passionate fans. Then I saw one of the first non-white players on the Flames and I was an Iginla fan for life after I saw what a brilliant player he was.
