Great review, I knew the stitching won't be perfect, but that's expected 0:25
the stitching is now darn near perfect with the updates to the desktop stitching application (this video was made before housing compensation was available on desktop)
Hey, can you use the dive housing on land for normal footage? Will the round case distort the footage?
its in the video
Nice video. Is this 4K video or 5.7K? Thanks
+Laura James you are right i just received my dive case and the stitching is way better. almost like there is no Case at all. also i used the Desktop app and the highest resolution i can put is 4K. i wish i know how to publish it in 5.7K
5.7, you can tell on these early ones that the stitch line is bad because I was using desktop studio which at the time didn't have stitch correction for the Dive housing. Now that has been included.
Hi. Just wondering how deep did you go on that dive? Any issues encountered?
Mine leaked at 18 meters and now my camera is toast.
Laura James thanks! :)
This dive was 60' max, but I've taken the Dive housing to 100' plus with no issues.
Hello Laura! Awesome job. Forgive the technical question but what software did you use to edit the video?
+Laura James Thank you Laura, let's hope the beta phase will soon come to pass. Next time you find yourself in the whereabouts of Venice (the proper Italian one, not the Florida thing) know I owe you a pint.
Hi there, i exported the footage using the desktop studio beta (it now has stitch correction! but not when i made this) and then did the edit in Final cut pro X 10.4.4
uw things are my favs. Cool.
underwater topics are my favs. Cool.
Beautiful nature underwater! It'd have been more seamless if you just attached the cam+housing straight up on the stick making it 'invisible' visually. Also remove the torch you placed under the cam. It only throws flares onto one side of the exposed housing. The visuals look great though!! Thanks for sharing! Looking forward to your next post with this housing. Magic at 2:11 :)
Just ordered the Venture case from GearBest website. €22 for underwater housing was too good a deal to pass. :)
+SUPmission these housings are camera specific. if something is made for One X, that is what it will fit, I would not bother with the One.
Laura James Thanks for the Venture case tip! Assume that it would also fit this 1X?
+SUPmission yes, exactly, for the 5.7k export it has to come from the desktop studio beta which does not have the stitch line correction for underwater case at the time of edit. Even so my experience so far when shooting any 360 is to avoid stitch lines directly on the subject matter unless using a camera such as google Jump or yi halo that uses different stitching technology/methodology. Its just a case of balancing the hopes with reality ;) If you are just going to use on SUP/Surf and not going for full on underwater footage you might consider their other housing, the Venture case because that allegedly won't have the base of the case in the shot.
Laura James Laura James Thanks for the clarification. I have yet to understand how the software and the gyrometer would work with each other until I get mine next week. Think I understand what you tried to avoid, stitch lines; seeing that while diving the cam would be pointed to the subject if it was a straight staff. I'm looking to use it on the water surface with 1-X attached to surfboard / sup. This I guess is easier with 1 lens facing front and the other on the user with seams on L-R. Let's hope there is (is it?) a dive housing underwater correction for those of us who'd be using the cam in it. Not everybody could afford the seamless GoPro option. :) What NLE did you use to edit this?
Very cool! I am wondering how this would work with the OpenROV Trident. I have seen your previous Trident videos using Dual Kodak PixPro SP3604K. I also own a Trident and have been considering a 360 cam for it as well as some of my aerial drones (specifically a Splash Drone). For using the Insta360 One X (or the original "One") on the Trident I envision a mast arm that would attach to the bolt pattern on the bottom and extend the 360 cam out in front of the vehicle to get clear view. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
+Laura James Hi Laura, I want to share with you my initial test with the Insta360 One X on the Trident. Overall I'm happy with the result and look forward to using it more. th-vision.net/detail/%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%B5%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%82%E0%B8%AD-fa5AQeMF1cg.html I also mounted it on my Splash drone to test aerial capabilities. I was impressed by that as well. th-vision.net/detail/%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%B5%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%82%E0%B8%AD-XveBPflCHLU.html
+Laura James great news! I'll be very interested to see that footage.
+Matt Balder there will be glare of sorts, I'll try to get it attached and get a sample this week so you have an idea what you are getting into :) BUT, the lights should end up being patched out with the nadir. I don't foresee it being horrible or any reason not to use it that way, and keep in mind, people very rarely look behind them, even in awesome 360 the heat maps show they spend majority of time in the front 220 degrees
+Laura James Thanks for the info on the original One, that could have been a big waste of money! Ya, the front seems like a good mounting place, maybe with just an adhesive mount and a safety lanyard down to one of the mounting holes below. I am also wondering how the trident lights will do with the insta 360x underwater housing. Would you anticipate any glair or reflection problems?
the original One (not X) is not a good choice, its housing does not focus. I've been sussing out how best to mount this camera, most likely it will be off the front so that the trident gets masked out when i patch the nadir/base of housing out. The One X housing and camera combo is a bit buoyant which allows for trimming things out perfectly which should mean it won't impact flying the Trident as much as the top/bottom Pixpro's that I had success with before.
Very cool insta360 ONE X video :) Lets support each other :)
So what are your impressions on this 360 camera for underwater videography? Is it the best do far?
I think it is the the best consumer option at the moment for underwater 360 yes. You have the nadir to patch (i'm uploading another video shortly without nadir patch so that there is full disclosure). I'm still just getting to know it but it has a ton of potential :) At the time of writing this, the software is still very much in Beta phase.
