Honda Odyssey : One Cooling Fan Works On High / Both Work On Low?

In this video I have a look at a Honda 3 relay cooling fan system. It is a very common way to use two fans with no resistor all while having a high and a low speed option. They are pretty reliable but like anything have their faults. Let's see what is wrong with this one. -Enjoy!

  • The A/C fan doesn't come on in my '86 Celica. I was looking at the wiring diagram a few hours ago, trying to remember the one electronics class I took in High School back when the hottest gaming system was called "Pong." I'm so glad I found this video because now I am going to make several photocopies of the relevant part of the wiring diagram, get me a pretty pink and a pretty purple highlighter and sort this out like the man that I am!

  • Typically when the 2 fans shut off and they both take the same amount of time to stop rotating and the suspect fan does not stop too much quicker than the good fan, there is no problem with bearings, dragging internal parts, etc. As you mentioned, due to the accident the fuse may have blown in the past, the body shop fixed the broken wire but did not know how to test a 2-speed fan system so they did not know the fuse was actually blown. That is my story and I am sticking to it. Thanks for the great video and diagnostics for 2-speed cooling fans. (Hiding in there somewhere is a bare wire waiting to short out hehehehe) Would like to have seen you manually bypass certain relays to operate each fan independent based on your different speeds on your wire diagrams just to prove out the theory but that is extra free work for your viewers hehe.

  • I would think that earlier in the year, when you repaired the AC, the high fan may not have even come into play. I once had a problem Jeep that died occasionally. Can't remember which fuse, but it used that same type of fuse and had a fracture in the internal conductor. Vibration, whatever, once in a while it would open and the engine would die, but restart eventually. In your case with high current, a cracked fuse would burn out and open permanently. Just a thought.

  • following your excellent diagram presentation I couldn't help but get devious when you said the one high speed leg is powered but it comes to a dead end.. so you could feed that into the horn relay. When the high speed fan circuit energizes, like when sitting in traffic with cars in front of you, the horn starts blowing :D :D

  • Had sort of the same problem years ago on my Chrysler New Yorker. Took it in and the problem was the fan. They replaced it and said it was fixed. (NOT) It worked fine while driving but when you came to a stop light and waited, the temp light would come on until you started driving again. Problem -- the fan was running backwards. Simple fix was just plug the wires in reverse. Needless to say I never took my car back to that shop again.

  • Oh no a come back 😢 just kidding

  • That's some neat engineering with the relays there. I remember when I was at MMI, they had these boards that you could play with, and install relays in all kinds of different configurations to make certain lights turn on, and others turn off, and some half bright - same concept here. I've forgotten half of what I've learned there over the past 2 decades. 😒 Don't get old! 😂 Sounds like you got the same gremlin infestation I had at the beginning of the year! They got my compressor, the differential in the Silverado, my 30 year old TV, and one of my cats (vet bills totaling 4-figures, all for worms 😖 ). Luckily a swift whack to the TV knocked the stupid out of it, and it's been working great! No parts needed, no dollars spent. 👍 A few other things broke, but I must've blocked all that out. 🤣 Been a non-stop money-hemorrhage-fest over here ... Those Starbucks Frappuccinos used to be my favorite. Drank those for years, until the company did something stupid (politically) and I stopped buying them. That happened with my favorite ice cream many years ago, too. Wish I could build a time machine, and go back to a normal time where companies just made products, and actors just acted, and musicians just made music, and everyone kept their ideologies to themselves. Ahh but I digress! There I go dreaming again ... 😞 Got 3 vids shot, and zero time to edit. I need to borrow some of your energy, brother - I don't know how you do it! Anyway, keep on keepin' on ... and I'll keep tryin' ... 😁

  • Very helpful. I am converting a two fan system to that same series/parallel scheme and I would have overlooked an important feature in the fuse layout. When maximum cooling is requested, separate fuses permit one fan to "do its best" even if its partner is dead. It is back to the drawing board for me but I will sleep easier knowing I have at least one HS fan when the system is calling for two HS fans. Many thanks for the extra time you put into the diagrams. The view of the fuse placement "sealed the deal" for me.
