Honda Odyssey : One Cooling Fan Works On High / Both Work On Low?

In this video I have a look at a Honda 3 relay cooling fan system. It is a very common way to use two fans with no resistor all while having a high and a low speed option. They are pretty reliable but like anything have their faults. Let's see what is wrong with this one. -Enjoy!

  • Your explanation of the wiring diagram was great. I think a lot of people are intimated by electrical work because they don't have a solid understanding of electricity and how to read diagrams. As an engineer I've had a lot of practice but I still enjoyed seeing you work out the logic here

  • following your excellent diagram presentation I couldn't help but get devious when you said the one high speed leg is powered but it comes to a dead end.. so you could feed that into the horn relay. When the high speed fan circuit energizes, like when sitting in traffic with cars in front of you, the horn starts blowing :D :D

  • Had sort of the same problem years ago on my Chrysler New Yorker. Took it in and the problem was the fan. They replaced it and said it was fixed. (NOT) It worked fine while driving but when you came to a stop light and waited, the temp light would come on until you started driving again. Problem -- the fan was running backwards. Simple fix was just plug the wires in reverse. Needless to say I never took my car back to that shop again.

  • Up here in Canada you get beavers stuck in the fans causing a high amperage draw which blows the fuses.

  • Saying what the actual problem is in there mind means you will accept no responsibility for the problem you fixed a month ago meaning the problem they now have is a problem YOU missed or didn't fix properly, they then hope you fix it for free because they paid once already

  • Oh no a come back 😢 just kidding

  • That's some neat engineering with the relays there. I remember when I was at MMI, they had these boards that you could play with, and install relays in all kinds of different configurations to make certain lights turn on, and others turn off, and some half bright - same concept here. I've forgotten half of what I've learned there over the past 2 decades. 😒 Don't get old! 😂 Sounds like you got the same gremlin infestation I had at the beginning of the year! They got my compressor, the differential in the Silverado, my 30 year old TV, and one of my cats (vet bills totaling 4-figures, all for worms 😖 ). Luckily a swift whack to the TV knocked the stupid out of it, and it's been working great! No parts needed, no dollars spent. 👍 A few other things broke, but I must've blocked all that out. 🤣 Been a non-stop money-hemorrhage-fest over here ... Those Starbucks Frappuccinos used to be my favorite. Drank those for years, until the company did something stupid (politically) and I stopped buying them. That happened with my favorite ice cream many years ago, too. Wish I could build a time machine, and go back to a normal time where companies just made products, and actors just acted, and musicians just made music, and everyone kept their ideologies to themselves. Ahh but I digress! There I go dreaming again ... 😞 Got 3 vids shot, and zero time to edit. I need to borrow some of your energy, brother - I don't know how you do it! Anyway, keep on keepin' on ... and I'll keep tryin' ... 😁

  • Man! Those two are growing! Great job, Mom & Dad.

  • Did you notice? The passenger side fan performs a *POST* when the Drivers' side fan goes to HI. Chuckle- My '89 Buick has a bi-directional touchscreen scan tool built in the dash. It does just about everything that $5,000 gizmo will do- OBD1, like a Tech-2 or that one Keith turned you on to- in a black leather case. 31 years ago. Why not now?

    • I'd be looking at the middle relay, it seems very suspect and could cause a short to ground and blow the left fan fuse that was whacked ;)

  • And that's why you charge a diagnostic fee. Lots of time chasing wires = time. Time = $$$ which pays for new equipment and repairing equipment. Thanks for the info, good video. 🚘

  • Very helpful. I am converting a two fan system to that same series/parallel scheme and I would have overlooked an important feature in the fuse layout. When maximum cooling is requested, separate fuses permit one fan to "do its best" even if its partner is dead. It is back to the drawing board for me but I will sleep easier knowing I have at least one HS fan when the system is calling for two HS fans. Many thanks for the extra time you put into the diagrams. The view of the fuse placement "sealed the deal" for me.

    • no, but a partially broken relay could ( the middle one) say bent or partially broken arm, could allow the contact to hit both the power feed from "left" fuse/relay to ground... kerpow goes fuse and worst case other fan blips on for a second............

  • I hate wiring. I don't know how you deal with it. I used to install car stereos, but that doesn't compare to the wiring an ECU has. And all it takes is 1 wire to mess up numerous operations. The one job I spent 2 weeks looking for a shorted wire. I finally found it to be a faulty ground. There was still paint on the ground. UGH. Hated wiring.

When I started the car it makes this loud hissing noise and the car doesn't idle and shuts off. It has power and drove it back and forth.. But that hissing noise is still there and it doesn't even idle and shuts down. It's starts up again but goes down. I eventually got back to my parking space where the car is parked . When I started yesterday. Everything was fine. Now this happen and wondering why. It's a carburetor version car
