  • The problem with carbon tax or gasoline taxes is that they hurt poor and working class people the most. I would love to drive a hybrid or a fully electric car. But they’re fucking expensive. I drive what I can afford. There’s problems in my state with increased regulations on car inspections. They’re well-meaning, but ultimately most people can’t afford to make the proper repairs (most of which are not structural problems, but emissions related issues). In my family, we make fairly good money. And everything is still too expensive. I don’t know how anyone makes it anymore to tell you the truth

  • Honestly guys, don't want to go all doom and gloom on you all, but the world is f#*cked. People don't see climate change as an imminent threat because it's an absolutely terrifying thought and they quite simply don't want to believe it's true. We don't want to believe horrible things are about to happen and by doing so we fail to act, thus ensuring they do. The solutions are simple, but they require working together, for the common good, something that is actively discouraged by neo-capitalism. Geothermal, hydro, tidal, solar, and wind are all alternatives we could use today to generate power. I don't see the global population developing the political backbone to affect change. I so hope I'm wrong on this one, but from what I have seen, I don't think that I am.

    • I agree with your points. People cannot keep denying it, and solutions need to be the priority not "we'll get to it." With everyday passing day we are losing opportunity to turn this around. Another point that definitely needs to be mentioned is a plant-based diet. There is no way animal agriculture is sustainable and it is a big factor in environmental degradation. These people focused on their hamburgers need to wake up to this fact, and make a change today. We don't need to wait for legislation to personally make this change and enact what we preach.

  • Carbon tax could work if that money was used to develop renewable infrastructure research etc. Trudeau is literally taxing canadians and giving the money back to people, disproportionate to how its collected. This will have NO affect on carbon use. ALSO Trudeau rep said this is how govt controls people's behavior and GUESS WHAT!!!, that is NOT the govts job!!!!!!!!!!!! Carbon tax is stupid and useless when you do dumb stuff like putting the money in general revenue and not innovating towards a renewable resource based future. So John just like media you left out an important game changing aspect of fact to make your point. Still love your show. Kick your research team in the balls they're careless.

  • We've got some real problems with the environment, but the problem with the green new deal is that you can't really just start a 'conversation' that drastic without any plans or ideas as to how you're going to achieve those goals. Stricter environmental laws mean stricter measures and possible sanctions and tariffs that will impact commerce. The green new deal will mean economic shambles as a whole. There is a need to address the environment, but you can't just take away thousands of jobs if not more without a viable pathway towards your goal.

    Kshitij BishtKshitij Bisht16 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • @Pat Doyle First of all, thanks for not calling me a cunt, a refreshing change. Secondly, did not know about the job creation under the Obama administration, will have to check up on that. Will try and read up as much as I can about what you said and let's see where that leads me.

      Kshitij BishtKshitij Bisht14 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • That makes no sense. When you have a crisis, and have not figured out how to solve it, that is EXACTLY when you need a conversation about it! That's where people can PRESENT the various ideas and plans that could help solve it and an overall strategy can be developed. You don't just ignore it until someone plops down a ready made solution. And since, as you pointed out, the Green New Deal is NOT a plan, but rather a definition of the problem, and a list of goals any statement you make about its economic effects is nonsense. That fact is that nearly every major environmental effort in our history has been good for the economy. Even now, more people are working in good green energy production jobs than coal and oil combined. In the 1970s I heard people say the same damned thing about plans to cut pollution and improve energy efficiency - it would cost millions of jobs, billions of dollars, and cripple the economy. Instead our efforts spawned entire new industries, created millions of new jobs and helped the economy!

      Pat DoylePat Doyle14 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • Why can't you do that? That seems like a foolish assertion. First of all there are LOTS of ideas out there to deal with this, but what you seem to be saying is that when there is a crisis, you have to ignore it until you have a plan, rather than talk to people to come up with a plan! And so far, there is no reason to think that addressing this would do anything but CREATE jobs - usually better ones! Did you know that the massive growth of green energy under Obama produced millions of good new jobs, and that now there are more people working in green energy production than coal and oil combined? I heard the same thing in the 1970s about how environmental action would cost millions of jobs - instead, it spawned whole new industries.
