This year we are getting a seemingly brand new take on the classic Batman villain, the Joker. This version stars Joaquin Phoenix as a failed comedian named Arthur Fleck - a new name for the old character. People are saying it's a whole new origin story for the Joker and I think that's true... but maybe not in the way most people are thinking. I think this Joker is not actually REAL! What do I mean? You're about to find out!

  • So from watching t movie you can automatically tell that the riot and the high tensions in the city are because of the social atmosphere and people took the clown thing as a sort o fm statement because some rich dudes got lit up also they show that when he was with his little honey he was actually alone like in the hospital scene and the comedy club 🤷‍♀️ seemed to me like someone who helped write this didn’t watch the movie

  • Really bad diagnosis. First off, schizophrenia isn’t the only mental illness with delusions. Bipolar disorder can be very similar to schizophrenia, so much so that it’s hard to diagnose one from the other as easily as people think. In addition, many illnesses come bunched together. One may have, for example, bipolar with schizoaffective disorder and OCD. One schizophrenic may be completely different from another. One may be violent, one may be docile. The point is that Arthur is on 7 different medications, so there is a good chance that he has multiple disorders. My brother who only has Bipolar without Depression (it’s a real thing look it up) and OCD takes 4 medications. But if he had trouble sleeping or hallucinations then the doctor would add another set of pills.

  • *SPOILER WARNING* I think the scene in the beginning of the film were Arthur imagines being on Murray's talk show is mirrored at the end where the Clowns of Gotham all praise him as he stands on top of the hood of the police cruiser. It's how he wants to see the world, not how it actually is. "We see the world not as it is, but as we are." Side note: this could also be why there are so many obvious parallels to The King of Comedy - Joker (in Arkham) retelling "his story" could be using the plot of The King of Comedy as a template for his origin story. The TRUE Joker at the end of the film is in current year, rather than in the 80's. The additional scenes with Bruce Wayne and Alfred at the gate are only after the fact that the Joker has figured out who Batman really is. This could also potentially be how the movie ties into the Batman solo film coming out.

  • To paraphrase what Jay said on Red Letter Media, the real joke is on those ideological idiots who took one sniff of the trailer and arrogantly assumed that this film would promote Incel violence and gun crime, who now have to sit back in embarrassment and shame as they realize what this film really promotes - mental health awareness. I get people don't want a film to promote violence, I was admittedly worried the film would too much support having resentment against society, but having an open mind aside, numerous films in the past have been more violent than Joker, and both not caused controversy, nor any crime, heck, one could reasonably argue that aspects of Islam or even Christianity can promote violence if read in the wrong way. Does it mean those should be censored and shunned too? When assessing the impact of art, or anything for that matter, you can't judge the outcome by the outliers.

  • The tragedy is Arthur dreamed of helping people by making them laugh, but in order to help other's you have to first help yourself. Arthur didn't find anything funny, he was too caught up in his own delusion and suffering, he didn't see a way out, so inevitably, he couldn't be funny either.

    DeepFried Wat3rMel0nDeepFried Wat3rMel0nวันที่ผ่านมา
  • I'm so relieved this film is fantastic, and that it treads the line so well of not convincing or aiding people to support Fleck's violent and resentful actions. I was worried this film, as were many, would encourage malcontent, though unlike many I came in with an open mind. you connect with Arthur even in his darkest moments, and while you know, in the most typically Tragedian sense, thanks to his iconography as the Joker, that his snap is coming, you're constantly wishing him to help himself. His life seems very bleak, with no easy escape, and that's how it is for some people, but the point is while there is no easy escape, there is a way out in the long term. I think more than anything what this film does is inspire people not to end up like Arthur, not to remain the sum of their faults, to be honest, have integrity, and not get lost in their fantasies, I think that's the power of art, i think it's why things like the Bible have stuck around so long, as while logically and rationally it doesn't hold up anymore - I mean really, it doesn't - is because the metaphorical essence of many of the story's remains and for all the faults religion can produce the reason it sticks around is because it connects universally with people, and films like this, Taxi Driver, and so on, are the same, not to compare joker 2019 to the Bible, obviously. A violent person could easily be spurred on to commit violence, but so could they be by the Bible, or the Koran, or many films and other art forms, it's not the responsibility of the artist, but the responsibility of the individual and those around them to ensure that they and other's don't go off the rails, and i think films like Joker have far more of a positive effect than a negative one, you can't judge an outcome by the outliers. Other films close to Joker I immensely recommend are *Her* (2013, also with Phoenix) and *Lars and the Real Girl* (2007) a terrific under-appreciated Canadian comedy-drama starring Ryan Gosling, about a humble but mentally struggling loner who falls in love with a sex doll, and the entire town have to go along with it. Both explore a far more positive outcome of battling these universal demons we all face, and the answer in both films is about disconnecting your current self from your fantasies, your anxieties, and your past, and by better integrating yourself with the world around you, expressing yourself more, interacting with people, finding the courage to express genuine positive emotion. These processes can be long and painful, and there is no quick fix, especially considering professional help is critically unavailable even now. But, with the immense toxicity and suffering social media and the internet gives, there are also benefits, we have a vast swath of resources on the edge of our fingertips, amazing podcasts, forums, communities, articles, lectures, ways to discover books and art and other things which, if you look in the right places ad don't get caught up in the overblown cancerous nature of online interaction and the media, can be life changing. An individual, whom I discovered through a friend, and whom I listen to regularly online on podcasts and lectures and debates, whom really changed my life, is Jordan Peterson. He is a controversial figure but he speaks truly to every person, and he is a genuinely caring, wise, and passionate person, and his book 12 Rules for life was the catalyst to lift me out of depression, as well as writing the first draft to my own novel. What I can recommend to anyone, who feels like they are drifting closely to the character of Arthur and his situation, or whom struggle with mental illness, is 3 things. Firstly, try in whatever way you can to get more regular sleep, it is far and above the most important of physical and mental health, and getting at least 7 hours will improve your life in every way imaginable. Secondly, find what it is you are truly passionate about, it will help guide your course through life, give you more genuine emotion and connection and inspire you to be motivated. lastly, find a way to interact, face to face, with more people positively, whether it's just saying hi or smiling at a stranger (unless you're in a city of course, RIP), and getting more involved in the real world, you''ll appreciate yourself more, feel more included, and see how you are not just a waste of space, with all your potential goodness only trapped inside your head. Articulate, express, regulate, and analyse your emotions. It is a long, difficult, painful process, but it is also one for immense improvement and benefit for those around you, and a chance to take some of that dream and ambition of having a great impact in life into reality. This is the great thing about Art, even art that is depressing, or bleak, it inspires self-reflection, and catharsis, and it inspires people to come together as a community and interact with and aid one another.

  • This film is kinda offensive to those people who suffer from mental health illnesses. "WHY"? While we are given an insight to a possible scenario involving a person with mental health issues, the film gives off the impression that people with mental health illnesses are prone to fantasising. That these people are prone to destructive thoughts and actions. That WE should be cautious of these people, rather than promoting acceptance and empathy.

  • "Completely original" meaning they took the story from movies instead of a COMIC, more specifically, they copy and pasted two movies, taxi driver and the king of comedy, together to make this flop. There's nothing original about this movie. It's almost exactly like the king of comedy, with the beginning of the movie being taxi driver. They're even mama's boys, with sexual undertones (yes, gamma males do want to screw their moms, which is why they marry women like their moms, but I digress).

Its made pretty clear that he is very poor from the beginning and he even loses his job...soooooo how does he have this 3 piece suit? unless he had been saving up for a while I suppose that this could support the idea that it is all playing out in his head.

    Zac_The_VikingZac_The_Viking2 วันที่ผ่านมา
  • This is why this joker fails. He doesn't even understand comedy. A joker must understand comedy. Comedy isn't subjective, it's actually extramely objective. If something isn't objectively funny, then it isn't comedy. That doesn't mean people have to laugh or get it, but there's nothing subjective about it, much like how Heath Legers Joker percieved comedy: he understood the comedy of people pretending to be civilized when they would eat each other to stay alive. There's an objective truth in that that makes it comedy, and as that iteration of the Joker identifies it as a bad joke, but a joke nonetheless. He understands jokes, he understands comedy. Comedy is a science. When someone says comedy is subjective, they're wrong. They just have a post modern mindset where nothing actually matters, and there's a name for those people, pathetic. Joker isn't supposed to be pathetic or exist without batman, which is the worst part about this movie. The Joker only exists because of batman, and if you take that away, you don't have a real joker. You have a sad guy is makeup, which sounds pretty boring. And there's a reason for why this isn't a real Joker. He doesn't follow any of the Jokers foundational principles. No acid, no wife, and no real tragedy that creates him. The entire basis of his character is a mirror of batman, one bad day made him the person he was. This joker was always crazy and was abused. Yeah that's sad, but it's not how you make a Joker.

  • It's not a masterpiece, it's not even original. It's a combination of taxi driver and the king of comedy. This Joker incarnation is bad, he just acts like a tranny when he makes his full transformation. It's a pretty bad movie considering the hype it's getting. 6/10
