Corvette C4 Still Misfiring

  • I had that exact same thing happen to me, but I have a L98 so I went through the distributor first so it wasn't as bad as an opti. By luck I continued into the night and was able to see the arching when it was darker out. New wires too so I was pissed. I use those shields over the wires now to help prevent that.

  • It's funny how often misfires happen now that we are a few years into 10% ethanol. Then trump announces a couple weeks back they want to goto 15%... WTF....!? NOOOOOOOOOOO.

  • Havent watched yet, but I used to work on these for a living. Usually missfire is caused by sticking injector, bad ecu or wiring issues, they fall apart and corrode.

  • Wish I caught you before you put it back together. The pre 1995 Optisparks were not vented and had some issues. The '95, and '96 Corvette Optisparks were very reliable. The one thing you should do with all of them, if you pull off the water pump, tap the bleed hole in the bottom of the water pump casting, install a simple brass fitting with a piece of vacuum tube on it and direct it away from the Opti-Spark so if the diaphram on the water pump blows out, it won't spray coolant all over your Opti and short it out. You should hang on to that Opti you removed. It's probably still good, and you know it's already been replaced at least once. I bet if you put some wires and plugs on that LT-1 it'll run like a champ. You guys are characters. Good videos. Take care.

  • If the opti wasn’t the problem before it’s gonna become a problem very soon... they are known to fail when water touches them so soaking it with the coolant from the water pump defiantly will not help. The optispark is the weakest point of the LT1 and LT4 engines by far

  • I used to own an LT1 with the good ole Opti. The way it works sounds badass on paper, it gives the PCM a damn near perfect idea of where the pistons are.. The optical sensor inside "reads" the holes in the the little plastic disc that rotates. It was so stupid of GM to mount it where they did. It's in such a shitty spot, UNDER the water pump?! and requiring you to remove it as well as the crank pulley just to replace it?! TIP: If you are troubleshooting and have things apart, make sure the water pump is connected or it won't start.

  • Why didn't you open the old opti spark so we could have a look inside? If it has a problem, it's usually from water leaking into it. If it's already been replaced, I would hesitate to replace it again. Shut off all the lights and look over the plug wires to find any arcing. Or run your hand down each wire to check for a crack. Much more entertaining when you find it..
