AMD Ryzen Frequency Scale - Temperature is Important for Ryzen 3000 CPUs

This video looks at AMD frequency and cold scale with full stock settings, using only Precision Boost 2 (NOT the same as PBO) and controlled temperatures.
Support GN via the store!
In this video, we manually manage temperatures between +84 degrees Celsius and roughly -80 degrees Celsius, showing incremental steps along the way to demonstrate cold scale. The end result is that we can learn how frequency behaves versus temperature on AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs, focusing most on the new R9 3900X (but also relevant to the R5 3600 and R7 3700X, etc.). The end result is that better coolers and better airflow cases will improve bottom-line performance, and so should be factored into component selection.

    • So basically it's auto 'overclocking' as long as your thermals are good (like you would make sure if you were manually overclocking) and if not it's doing the best it can with the thermal situation it finds itself in. So instead of just maxing it until it gets too hot and needs to dial it back or do an abrupt shutdown, it scales it's capability with the live real world conditions it's facing. I actually like this, it does the best it can with what it's got to work with ramping up and down as needed, instead of enforcing a certain high or max setting which is not taking into account the thermal situation it's in until it's in a bad spot and needs to react to it. It will live and breathe in it's environment getting a feel for it and dealing with it accordingly. It is an improvement I think and makes the chips smarter and reactive to the real world rather than expecting to run optimally always which in the real world isn't always the case so in this way it adapts to it's environment. :D

    • Motherboards are 30-40% more expensive than Z390 motherboards. And this video says exactly straight that - to get boost working as expected you need better cooling.

    • So , you tell us how much of a consideration cooling should be on Ryzen 3000 while at the exact same time hardware unboxed puts a video out telling us how little cooling matters on Ryzen 3000 . Nice going guys , now iam as confused as a confused thing in the dark .

    • @coth The motherboards are no more expensive than their Intel counterparts. Also, AMD needs LESS cooling than Intel parts. Try again, cuckboiii.

    Target -DroneTarget -Drone23 วันที่ผ่านมา
    • A 212 would do fine. But if you're not looking to break the bank, and want to maximize the chips potential, grab an AIO water cooler. These chips really do their best on any form of water. I'm on custom water I've had since 2006, it's not quite as good as more modern water blocks, but it's comparable to the best AIO's, and it does show up in benchmarks. Either that, or go with a 212 and invest in the best RAM you can afford, because you'll likely get more performance from fast RAM than you will water cooling.

  • As an engineering student it's really hard for me to watch some of these charts on otherwise one of the most scientifically accurate review channels. 10:14 being a perfect example. 1. 90% of the area is completely unused and the real plot trend is effectively non-existend on this chart. 2. The effect of gradually plotting the chart in time is cool but discrete data measurements are rarely being connected with a linear (or spline) interpolation as it implies that you have perfect knowledge of all the infinite continuous values between measured data points. It is usually more accurate to use a point chart with a trend line approximating these values. Something like this would be more scientifically accurate though still not ideal: The equations and trend lines here would also be debatable since it's not representing a mathematical prediction from physical theory and I guess you don't have a specific trend (ex. from a data sheet) that you are looking for either. The reverse X-axis is also hard to swallow but I get the reasons.

  • Okay, so as a dude with a watercooled rig with noctua fans and monoblock + 1 pump/res combo and a 280 rad, with a 2700x and gtx 1080 in the same loop that both OC in the top 1% of UserBenchmark, and with the understanding that you need to keep the 3000 series cpus below 60 degrees, = To keep below 60 you'll probably need a 1 rad & pump combo in a mid-large case for a 3700x *alone*. You can probably get away with adding a GPU to the loop but can't guarantee that the card won't make the CPU temps go up a few ticks during gameplay or post-production. = For a 3900x, you'll need to isolate a CPU loop with a massive 360-480 rad (or 2) with badass SP fans and a large case. These are so that you can keep both cpus below 60 degrees. It's expensive, but so is performance maximization in general. You're going to have a shitty time getting optimal overclocking results with air and AIO (unless you are in a room constantly in single figure temps celsius), so would not bother recommending this.

  • I think my i5 9600K beats the shit out of 3900X at 5GHz/costs . My CPU: 5 GHz costs up to a few hundreds depending on the cooler(a decent air one like Dark Rock 4/ Pro4, , or a 240/360 AIO) 3900X :well .. .costs like thousands and thousands As for pure gaming, just go and buy an i5 9600K as long as you find it at a reasonable price. I got mine new, at a price a bit lower than a 2600 non X . In my country a good X570 mobo is stupid expensive like imagine a GIGABYTE AORUS Z390 PRO at the price of a GIGABYTE AORUS Z390 MASTER plus a few tens of $. Not to mention you really need a good cooler for a 3900X or any Ryzen, so the costs are still big for a new AMD platform. As for using only the 3000 series CPU on a X470 mobo, is still not always worth. Z390 mobos are still better equiped than X470 mobos(especially in the same price range).
