Friend and colleague Fon Davis gives Adam Savage a tour of Grant Imahara's shop, untouched since his passing in July 2020. Tested is honored to chronicle this very special makerspace, at the behest of Grant's mother Carolyn, before its contents are donated, sold or relocated.

  • I worked in a tool and die shop and had an older coworker, the kind that everyone in the shop knows and loves, die in a complete bolt from the blue shop accident... there was a bandsaw he used when building setup jigs, and nobody used it for a solid year. I asked someone who knew him better why, and he told me that so long as nobody else was standing in front of it, they all expected to look over some day and see him there again. It just seemed so wrong that he wasn't there to all of us... so I think I get what's going on in their heads, just a little bit

  • The Grant Imahara videos have a unique feel. Much needed. He was a true inspiration. Would it be possible for you and Fon Davis to do an episode about Grant's work on MORAV? [Focusing on the humanoid robots. The "puppets" that were to be used for filming.]

  • As a senior engineering student that grew up watching myth busters, this is hard yet inspiring to see. I set up my first project “lab” in my parent’s place 4 years ago. I’m now dreaming of graduating and building my own ideal project lab once I have my first job and can financially sustain it. It just brings into perspective the art that an artist leaves behind and their legacy. All the silly gadgets i’ve tried to build.. The thought of my loved ones perhaps holding onto them as pieces of myself is heartbreaking and beautiful.

  • Ok, TV show pitch idea: Have a bunch of kids/teens/young makers submit videos of a project they've made, and a project they want to make. Select the best of these, and give each one a whole episode where they have full access to this space to make their dream project.

  • When they were talking about the joy of designing and setting up there own shop it really hit me because I’m in the process of doing the same thing (kinda). I’m just about ready to build my first personal editing rig so I can work on video projects at home. The scale is different but the idea of the design of the space that all your future projects will come out of hit me hard.

  • That final shot, with the camera floating a little, gives us the viewers that moment of solace in that incredible space of Grant's. A moment to feel the energy and excitement of what it must have been like with Grant working away in there. Whoever decided on that, thank you so very much. And thank you, Grant x

  • I've never been in this situation but I can feel the difficulty in making the decision/s for the future and moving forward. I assume if money and space was not an issue, it would be an easy decision to leave everything exactly how it is, but at the same time, I assume, you would feel that Grant what want the space and/or tools used to make things, just as he did. The portrait on the door really got me as well.. Especially the way Fon made eye contact with Grant in the portrait as he was opening the door.... It doesn't depict Grant in an egotistical way (as many portraits like this do). More of someone who is proud of what they have done, who they have become and who they are as a person, without any sense of vanity.

  • You never know when you're gonna go. Better to make your peace now: peace with family, peace with friends, peace with God especially. If anyone wants to discuss peace with God give me a poke and we can figure out a way to talk. On an unrelated note, as someone who works in a machine shop it always brings a small smile to see old Bridgeports still kicking around.

Things that i was curious about, things that made every child wants to tinker and possibly break or learn about. he and mythbusters gave me that. Thank you for all the mythbusters team and thank you especially for Grant. May his Soul rest in peace and may his Shop Continue living on as Grants hands for the future generations. He was beloved by all and may he remain beloved till death do us part.
